New learning trends in construction engineering


An everyday architectural classroom witnesses a professor droning about the basics as well advances of architecture. The theories and rigorous rhetoric have proved to be the key hurdles in the academic development of several students. In addition, such tedious theories impede the visualizing capacity of many students. Presently, the construction sector witnesses a dire shortage of qualified architects.  Such shortages have motivated several educators to introduce technology in the architecture pedagogy. At present, several Barch college in Uttarakhand are awed by the marvels of animations, virtual reality 3D visualization along with walkthroughs taking place in virtual desktop environment. These colleges are striving to attain a technologically equipped classroom.



The problems with the existing pedagogy of architectural science

As per traditional methodology, students studying architecture must go in fields (construction sites) to get firsthand experience of a construction process. However, such an experience is not easy to come due to numerous factors such as:- 
  •       Logistic difficulties hinder the visit to a construction site
  •       Also, there are several risks involved at a construction site, lowering the chances of a field trip
  •     The designated construction site may not be at a stage to cater to the architectural students during the academic semester 

How technology is changing the architectural science’s pedagogical structure?

Thanks to the wonders of IT technology, the teachers can make students understand even the most complex of architectural principles and concepts. The growth of the World Wide Web as well as multimedia has helped in enhancing the 3D Visualization capabilities. Further, the capableness of visualization helps the passionate students learn the ropes of architectural engineering all by themselves.

The serviceability and dependability of IT revolution have reshaped the way learning is done in a classroom, especially that of an architectural field. The contemporary architecture students want the use of keyboard and mouse to be enhanced for fostering interactive learning and breaking the traditional chalk and talk approach of teaching. 

By implementing the concepts of IT technology, a sudden change has happened in the general architectural classroom. The change is reflected by:-

  •       Ease of understanding the complex theories with the help of virtual environment.
  •     Using the abilities of rich multimedia, interactivity, virtual walkthrough, animation, manipulated image visualization and interactivity. All of such developments have replaced the obtuseness of learning via written theory.
  •      The working as well as failures of steel joints in a constructional project is hard to trace with physical 2D drawing. However, the advent of virtual reality programs has filled this pedagogical gap. 

What’s the need for such a change?

The Construction industry has become complex with each passing day as the project’s difficulty increases and its duration for project’s completion decreases. The conceptualizing and designing of a modern construction project cannot be built with 2D drawing.  One needs a more sophisticated approach – such as 3D graphics, network capabilities, etc. – to carry out the task.

As the traditional teaching format presents several shortcomings in making students understand complex 3D designing, it becomes significant to tap the marvels of cutting-edge networking, 3D modeling and designing technologies.

Nowadays, students should not be crestfallen whenever they do not get an admission to prestigious architectural colleges; as now, the students can opt for an architectural program from a college offering multiple courses.
